A neat sci-fi story with an intriguing character study

I once had Astropilots, and I still can remember much of the storyline. I liked the book very much.Astropilots is the story of a young man from a world outside our solar system who once went to a special school for pilots, the Collegium, and was so skilled he would've become valedictorian of his class -- if a fellow classmate called Tram hadn't decided to become valedictorian by sabotaging his ship so that the young man, Jason MacLeod, would crash his ship (I don't know if Tram was trying to kill him or just cause him to crash so Jason would fail the final exam and no longer be valedictorian). Years later, Jason returns with an alien friend, seeking revenge. This alien is a telepath and has the secret to travelling faster than the speed of light. When Jason arrives, he meets Andrea Ito, the provisional valedictorian of her Collegium class, and learns that Tram is now head of the Collegium -- with plans to begin a inter-solar system war! Jason and Andrea must work together to stop him, and in the process become friends -- and fall in love.Astropilots is at least in part a character study of Jason. Thanks to the events of the story, both we and he learn that he and Tram are alike in that they both have destructive impulses, as shown in Tram's intentions and in Jason's desire for revenge. However, Jason has a conscience and a capability for friendship and love which curbs his destructive tendencies. This is borne out in his growing friendship and love for Andrea and his friendship with the alien. When Jason avoids killing Tram, he avoids the fate of Tram, and is free to make a new life for himself. If you can find the book, read it to see this character study in action.Belle Book

Needs to be a movie

I enjoyed this book very much. The characters are so well written, I felt like I knew them personally. If I knew how to write a screenplay, this, I'm sure, would be a blockbuster. I haven't even read the book in over 6 years, but I can remember the whole thing like I just read it.

One of the best SF books I've ever read

Astro Pilots is a good book. I like Sf books and this one beats them all. The author seems to know the characters very well as they are described carefully with a very good detail. It is very inriguing and when I have nothing to do and would like to read something I end up with this book in my hands. The author not only does she know how to write, but seems to know Physics and Chemistry, and also knows how to use her brain. This is shown by the telepathic alien called Sssrei who is Jason's friend. This alien has a different view: "shifted into the ultraviolet", and the writer succeeded in getting the right colour that the living crystal ball saw for violet. Mixon wrote a good book making Collegium very realistic indeed, and whenever I read the book I always feel as if I'm one of the cadets attending the school. I wish that this school really existed.
