Assignment: Istanbul, by Ted Cron smacks of a story the author has written while hoofing it :-) around the teeming, narrow streets of exotic Istanbul. I've been to Istanbul, and kept smiling at the authenticity of his descriptions. Cron's style is fluent, his hero likeable, his insights into how "globalization" is played out in Turkey and Turkmenistan, keen, and his character portraits clear, and without judgment. This is a compact novel, but enjoyable and even informative. I am looking forward to read the next installment in the adventures of his hero, Jerry Stern.
