22 June 1940. Britain stands alone. The French have signed an armistice with Hitler's Germany. Prime Minister Winston Churchill foresees looming danger. The French Navy-fourth largest in the world, comprised of dozens of powerful battleships, cruisers and destroyers-is scattered in ports throughout the Mediterranean.
