Donna Kay has done an amazing service to arts educators with this book. The text is written for visual arts teachers, but its principles can be applied just as easily to the disciplines of music, dance or theatre. As most arts educators can attest, we often go to assessment workshops that just teach the classroom teachers to do what we do every day. We needed a book to teach us how to effectively assess how our students create and perform. Donna Kay does that with this book. She first defines assessment, then gives an outline of specific assessments that are appropriate for an art classroom. Each chapter begins with a real-world story that leads into the text. Chapter 2 contains the most practical, ready-to-be-used information; there are 58 innovative, authentic assessment tasks that can be used within the framework of an arts lesson. This is a fantastic resource for pre-service teachers and also for teachers who have been in the classroom for years. It would make a great book study for the arts teachers in a school district. Along these lines I would also recommend Marilyn Stewart's Thinking Through Aesthetics. On a side note, if you ever have the chance to see Donna Kay Beattie present in person, you need to go. She is a phenomenal presenter who will absolutely blow your mind.
