I knew Ballard Hadman from 1956 to 1958

Ballard Hadman gave me a signed copy of her book in 1957 when I was only 13 years old. We lived next door and I used to play with her son, Johnny Hadman. She was a very impressive woman. She built artistic furniture, painted beautiful large paintings, did ceramic work and, of course, wrote. She loaned me many classic books in an attempt to get me acquainted with that part of history while we lived 11 miles from Ketchikan, Alaska on North Tongass Road. She was one of those really great people in my life.

One of The Best I've Ever . . .

If you have ever been on the ocean, anywhere in the world, in a small boat, you'll appreciate and identify with the crises, excitements and experiences described in this book! It is amazing that a tale from the 1930's and 40's could be so gripping, so laughable, so enjoyable and so down-to-earth and still similar to what one experiences on the water today! I would also recommend it for younger readers in search of something different, something out of the main stream, but something real!
