JAVIER MAR AS' LATEST BOOK OF ARTICLES:
ONE OF THE MOST BRILLIANT COLUMNISTS, A KEY WRITER IN CONTEMPORARY SPANISH LITERATURE
"Mar as is simply amazing." --Ali Smith
"Javier Mar as is a wonderful writer." --John Banville
"Anyone who doesn't read Mar as is doomed." --The Nation
This volume brings together the last seventy-five articles published by Javier Mar as in the Sunday supplement El Pa s Semanal between January 31, 2021, and September 11, 2022.
Javier Mar as began writing for El Pa s Semanal in 2003, and for almost two decades shared his reflections on current affairs, as well as his memories and hobbies, his personal and cultural loyalties.
"Some sorrows never go away and some people are never forgotten," he recalls at the beginning of the article that gives this book its title, in which he remembers his friend Juan Benet and affirms that we prolong the lives of those who have left their mark on us "by asking ourselves what they would have thought of what is happening today."
Mar as' readers wonder today, same as he did, what he would have written about many of the events that have taken place in the world since he is no longer with us. Yes, we miss his perspective on current events.
A serious tone and humor coexist when he addresses issues such as the ineptitude of politicians, slander on social media, irresponsible attitudes during the pandemic, the deterioration of the Spanish language, smartphones as "instruments of surveillance and control"... These pieces are joined by others on more personal issues, as well as his passions: soccer, movies and TV series, books, music. And the hilarious stories he interspersed, featuring peculiar characters. Although their adventures remained unfinished, thanks to the author's masterful prose, they leave a lasting impression on the reader's memory and are not forgotten.
