As Almost Always and Then Some is a coming-of-age novel set in a small Wyoming town, wherein boys and girls learn about love, themselves, and their friends around them. Best friends and high school seniors Mikey Little and Eric Mann navigate the throes of life, including the intertwining and supposed loves of their lives and the anxieties that come with that. Mikey battles with finding a girl, and then with the highs and lows of the beginnings of a relationship. The problem-solving Eric Mann deals with what comes after: the long-term. Both of these boys have something to learn, and then some. Together they get a bigger glimpse of what life is about through talking it out at school, at parties, and on bus-trips to away games. Other friends come and go too, including History teacher Mr. Davies, who helps the kids get along as much as he can while dealing with his own issues, which of course include love. Freshman Billy James is also eager to learn and love, and he, like everyone else, is ready for a piece of the pie called life. Only with each other AND on their own are each of these small town kids ready to see what's next.
