Art with a Purpose, for "At-Risk" students is a curriculum that helps identify the "troubled" students who have the possibility of hurting themselves or others. In these art lessons we can visualize a "state-of-mind" through the creative process in hopes to gain insight of any negative thoughts that have been developing. When something suspicious is revealed in their artwork school counselors, parents, therapists will be notified and a proper course of action will be set. There are 3 levels of art lessons: 1.) General Population (students and their families, as well as staff are introduced to this program through workshops). 2.) Care & Concern (any student who has been referred by a teacher, parent, another student will have additional art lessons specific to helping them express their troubling thoughts). 3.) Immediate (a student who is having a meltdown can get their anguish out through art rather than harming themselves or others) Each art lesson is designed to help the students express themselves when words are not enough. This workbook is in a lesson-plan format and anyone can facilitate the step-by-step directions. The curriculum is within the ACLU Guidelines and incorporates the National Core Standards for Visual ART . When an "At-Risk" student can share their thoughts and feelings they feel heard, seen and consequently valued. WE HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE. Let's START with ART.
