A Classic Deer Hunting Guide

The Art of Successful Deer Hunting (ASDH) is a re-publication of Francis Sell's previous book titled, "The Deer Hunter's Guide." I have both copies, and the books are identical, from the pagination down to the index. The only differences are the cover, artwork, and titles. There are thousands of "how to" books on the market about hunting and shooting, but Francis Sell is one of the few authors who not only knows the sport of deer hunting--he can teach it. ASDH is a book which tells you--from clothing and firearms to tracking and equipment--how to hunt, what to bring, and what to wear. He doesn't get into issues that change from state to state, but concentrates on practical steps that every hunter can use. For example, how many guides have you seen that talk about thermal flow these days? Mr. Sell was doing it by 1964. Another great example is his discussion of how to follow deer trails slowly and carefully, or where to select a stand location. I would say that one of the most impressive discussions in Sell's book (books?) is his description of choosing a firearm. He concentrates, like a natural gun bug, quite a bit on cartridge selection, but he carefully emphasizes the need for the rifle to fit the user in stock fit, weight and balance--items that often go overlooked in today's "one size fits nobody" marketing. Without going through the entire index, I'd like to conclude by saying that Sell's advice is literally timeless. The advice he gave in the (original) 1964 edition and repeated in ASDH is as useful in 2000's as it was in 1964. If you follow his advice, you will have a better chance of getting close to deer. If you like Sell in this edition, I'd also encourage you to look up his articles in Gun Digest, as well as his books on shotgunning and fishing. He is endlessly readable, and tells a great story.
