Great Expectations?

This book would be a great primer for undergraduate students -- it provides great information for an introduction for what to look in art -- for that I give four stars, but as far as the general public is concerned, I believe artworks need more explanation than just the basic contextual implications in that artwork and the description. These are too basic in description and do not pursue necessary data for appropriate critical analysis, including synthesis. A student who has studied art content or symbolism in art, would enjoy the many modern artworks in an enjoyable armchair environment. For use as an undergraduate reference work, I give a three-star applause. For armchair reading, a five.

Great for the Beginning Art Student

This is a great book for the beginning art student. It teaches the reader: context, visual elements, composition and criticism, two/three-demensional media, architectural media, images of nature, nudes in western art, images in faith, images in America, the modern movement, early and late twentieth century art. This book breaksdown all of those subjects for the beginning art student. If you would like to learn about art this is the book for you.
