I agree with the person up above who said she is amazed that this story isn't better known. I picked it up at a book sale when my kids were already pretty big, so it's not one we read over and over, but it's one that always touches me very deeply. It's a beautiful story.

It amazes me how little known this masterpeice of storytelling is. I first read (and reread, and reread again) the book when I was in the second or third grade, and it always left me filled with a sense of wonder. The art is beautiful, and the story is told in simple, quiet, straightforward language that makes it almost, very nearly, possible to believe it's really true, despite the fantastical happenings.
