Who was Arcadius Avellanus? Born 1851 in Hungry, when Latin was still an official state language, he emigrated to the States in 1878, where he became the leading proponent of reviving Latin as a living language. He translated many novels and stories, such as Insula Thesauria (Treasure Island) which are receiving increasing critical attention, and produced a long running Latin-Language newspaper. He later became professor at St John's College at Brooklyn. Alongside his varied literary work is the Tusculanus Latin Course, in two volumes, Palaestra (ISBN-13: 978-1724489449) and Arena Palaestrarum. Because he was brought up from his first years speaking Latin as a living language, we might justly claim these to constitute the only Latin primer written by a native speaker (if we discount the Colloquia of the Hermeneumata Pseudodositheana). Arcadius Avellanus was often in conflict with the classicists of his day in the manner in which Latin should be taught. He was, in fact, ahead of his times in the way he taught Latin as a living language and his aim was to entertain and give pleasure to the reader while they learned. A contemporary course using the methods of Arcadius Avellanus is "Lingua Latina per se Illustrata". The first volume, Palaestra, can be used as a stand-alone book by those who are simply curious about how this beautiful ancient language worked. For those who want to acquire the facility to tackle pretty well any Latin text, from Golden Age authors to Medieval writers, the second volume, Arena Palaestrarum will give the reader all the knowledge they will need.
