Dr. Ralph Nichols pioneered bringing both the importance and science of developing good listening skills to national attention. Beginning with his doctoral dissertation entitled, "Factors Accounting for Differences in Comprehension of Materials Presented Orally in the Classroom" back in 1948, he devoted much of his academic life to working in this arena. His "Are You Listening" book written with Leonard Stevens and being offered here, is a classic. While Paul Rankin back in the early part of the 20th century began opening our eyes to how poorly we as Americans listen, it was Dr. Nichols, back in the 50s, who really brought this issue to national attention both in education, and business. Nichols went on to develop training programs devoted to teaching how to become a better listener, and spoke extensively on this subject. If you want a real classic in this area, get this book.
