As a career counselor, I am always searching for resources that are both informative about the psycholological impact of change and pragmatic enough to provide concrete guidance for persons navigating a career transition. This is the book I most often suggest to clients who have been laid off or are otherwise in the middle of a job change under challenging circumstances. I highly recommend this book.
Great book for governing unexpected change

I found this to be an excellent read - a real motivational book, especially for someone coming out of the .com craze. This book told of all the mood changes and feelings of anxiety that come from being downsized or from a company that has gone out of business. It also contained a good list of resources relating to where you were in your search for a new career. Loved it. Recommend it to anyone on the edge.
Finally some focus on the emotional journey

I think Ruth has made an important contribution to the genre. There are many books on the market that deal with how to find a new job, etc. but this book is the first I've seen that focuses on the emotional journey that comes with this type of life change. I found the practical, straight-forward advice very refreshing. --Katherine E. Simmons, President, NETSHARE, Inc., a prize-winning career-management web site for executives

Illustrated with a rich array of engaging, real-life accounts, Luban shares the success stories of those who have suffered, thrived and ultimately survived corporate downsizing and displacement. In this day and age of downsizing and displacement, this "Survival Guide" is an invaluable resource guide for everyone in the workplace.
It's been a great help to me so far!

Oh, if only this book would be given out by HR Departments when they downsize, as is on the news every day! I lost my job a while back, and reading through this book, I really relate to the experiences. The set-up is logical. The advice is smart and easy to understand, and the exercises are actually pretty fun. You can also pick up and put down the book without needing to start over. I don't have a new job yet, but I feel OK about that, and I think this book is to credit. In fact, I wish I had read this book before I got laid off--I might have realized I was in the wrong job!
