Excellent academic approach, but not for novices ('91 ver)

This book (the 1991 version) helped me tremendously. It is a complete book on grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, etc. The type of material you might get in an advanced arabic class. Although, he starts from the beginning, (the alphabet), he accelerates very quickly to more advanced material. This is definitely not your "i'm going to egypt for the summer and would like to learn a few arabic phrases" type of book. It is more for the serious student who wants to take a more long-term approach. I spent 6 months and only got thru half the book. This book is ideal for arabic people who were raised in the USA but have limited arabic skills because they were never taught arabic in a formal setting (in school), as in my case. My limited knowledge of formal arabic (i'm OK in colloquial arabic) helped me get by when the going got tough.my only gripe is that some of the arabic in the 1991 text was hand-written instead of typeset. And the font looks like it was type-written and photocopied. It could use some polishing up. i will definitely order the newer 1996 version and start where i left off. Hopefully, i'll finish the 2nd half.Houssam Moustafa
