For generations, the villagers have obeyed without question, because they know what happens when someone makes a mistake . . . someone will disappear.
As April Hale turns forty, the cursed night returns, bringing whispers in the dark, footsteps in the empty streets, and a presence that walks patiently through the sleeping village, calling their names one by one.
April remembers very little about her birthdays. But every time the storm comes, someone is taken. And the only clue left behind is mud on her feet.
