I taught Hamlet for the first time this semester and found this book immensely helpful. The essays cover a wide range of approaches to teaching the play and contain useful ideas for all kinds of classes--whether survey classes or seminars, classes composed of high school students or undergrads or graduate students, as well as students with a range of proficiency with the English language and with literature & literary analysis in general. I found particularly helpful the essay on the theme of "obedience" in Hamlet, and also used several of the exercises described in other essays -- one in which the students "stage" the "play-within-the-play" from Act III (fun and effective) and another having them compare different texts of the "O, what a rogue & peasant slave am I" speech from Act II (harder for my community college undergrads). I had the book from the library, but will be buying my own copy so I have it for next semester--when I teach the play again.
