Book Overview

This manuscript mentions the beginnings of Balintawak eskrima, its founder, the place where it was practiced and some of the persons that were part of its history,

The manuscript discusses the basic techniques that are the foundation for more advanced ones. These include learning the 12 strikes of the system and the defense and counters against it.

Specific and more advanced ways of defense and offense are learned by repeating the many examples that are given, i.e. Sablig, Tukas, Suyop, and Yakap.

Defensive-offensive techniques like Sinawali, Panilhid, Sasa, use of the left hand, and Disarms are exemplified numerous times.

There are some necessary and very important techniques to learn to give the practitioner greater skill in the execution of certain techniques as an edge against his opponent; these are: Puk-puk, Maglalatik, Hip and shoulder rotations, Dirty finger, Stick release, Trangka, and Lansis.

The last part of the manuscript mentions certain objectives to mentally help the eskrima student in the study and execution of this art.

Graduate Level textbook for Balintawak

Teddy Buot was Anciong Bacon's Punong Guro (Head Instructor). Had he not immigrated to the United States, Anciong had picked Teddy to be his heir. Rad Maningas studied under Teddy Buot for almost 3 decades. In his first book, "Balintawak - Lessons in Eskrima," Rad beautifully weaves personal anecdotes with the fundamentals of Balintawak. This book is one of the essential primers for Balintawak Eskrima. In his second book, “Applied Balintawak,” he expands on Balintawak with the detail and density of a graduate level textbook. Each page and picture sequence are laden with secrets for the observant. While no book can replace a guro, these books can certainly provide guidance and inspiration. The various stories that Rad includes help to underscore his lessons and provide insight into the minds and character of Teddy Buot. These books are mandatory for anyone training or interested in Balintawak. Of note, the “grouping” method in Balintawak was an innovation of Attn Jose Villasin rather than part of Anciong’s teaching. As such, Teddy Buot did not use or teach “grouping.” For details on the Sam Buot/Villasin branch of Balintawak, consider “Buot Balintawak Eskrima: A Filipino Fighting Art, 2nd Ed.” – an equally extensive treatise on this comprehensive and beautiful art. Rumor has it that there is a video compendium to complement “Applied Balintawak” in production…. Mark Kwong Guro, Sam Buot Balintawak
