Appendicitis and Pregnancy

The incidence of acute appendicitis in pregnancy is significant, but it is subject to a set of surgical challenges that makes the study of this entity interesting. The study aimed to characterize the behavior of Acute Appendicitis in pregnancy at the General University Hospital "Vladimir Ilich Lenin" in the period from March 2018 to March 2022. A descriptive observational study and prospective character was conducted in cases of appendicitis in pregnancy. The non-probabilistic purposive sample 47 pregnant women operated on for appendicitis. Clinical history and a data collection model were used to obtain data. The predominant cases were between 20 and 34 years old, with a second trimester of gestation. The predominant clinical symptoms were pain in the right iliac fossa and right flank, with less than 24 hours of evolution. Prevalent complications were maternal, with the threat of premature delivery and pneumonia standing out, while surgical complications were infection in the surgical wound and hematoma, all in the predominance of the conventional approach.
