Book Overview

Apache Legends are the stories orginally related in song by Lou Cuevas' full-blooded Apache grandfather about the origin of many desert or prairie creatures, such as the roadrunner, hummingbird, buffalo and rattlesnake which were important in the Apache worldview. The tales are often humorous and always indirectly teach a moral by which Apahe children were intructed in noble human values. Lou's vivid narratives capture the imagination and transport the reader into the world of ancient American southwest, where a magical ceremony can turn boys into birds that fly and youthful romance takes on a new meaning. The Apache are descendens of an Athabasscan-speaking people migrating here more than 2000 years ago.

Apache Pride

Mr. Cuevas has done an absolutely great job in retelling these ancient stories of the Apache people. My grandmother (who was part Apache) also told me stories that she had heard when she was a child. Unfortunately, I do not remember the vivid details as the author does. As with most Native American knowledge, this information has been ignored in mainstream history books for way too long. Keep writing Mr. Cuevas. Great book!
