Anyone who reads western novels recognizes the name of Lauran Paine, decendant of Thomas Paine of Revolutionary War time, who it is said has written close to 900 books. Wonder how he has time to sleep. Mr. Paine is a very talented author and I have read several of his westerns, including a recent one made into a movie, Open Range. But this book somehow was unknown to me, coming upon it as I did at our local library. I'd read of the Apache Kid before and have a couple books on his life in my own library, so thought I would read what Mr. Paine had to say. The book is written almost as a biography so I do not classify it as a novel, with the book starting soon after Geronimo has been captured for the last time. The beginning of the book starts around 1886-1890. And must say that this book is more in depth than several others I have read, thereby offering more facts of the 'Kid's' life. To read about this Apache who escaped them all, when both Arizona and New Mexico had placed overwhelming forces into the field to capture him, is hard to take in. However, it is all true, and as Mr. Paine sums up 'the Kid' died sometime during World War II. Out foxed em all, and out lived em all. If you are interested in reading about the most hunted, most feared, most detested Apache of the post Apache Wars in Arizona Territory, and one of the most gifted all around trackers and scouts for the U.S. Army, then you must, you gotta, read a book on his life. His life is so unbelievable, it defies Ripley's believe it or not. Believe it or not! Great factual reading from the pen of a great writer. Best in reading, pards. Semper Fi.
