Poetic romance at its best

Upon experiencing this breathtaking work of fiction, you are bound to rediscover the outstanding poesy that readers have come to expect from Zebra Lovegram novels. Judith Steel weaves a stunning tapestry of passion, yearning, gun belts, intrigue, and yearning, all the while keeping intact the brutal reality of the Apache struggle to maintain their cultural identity in the face of American oppression.As the novel begins, the reader is introduced to Meadowlark Russell, whose heaving copper-skinned bosom is described in meticulous detail. This beautiful Apache half-breed refuses to lose her culture to the white man, rebelling against his hegemonic enterprises throughout the novel by using such characteristically Native American analogies as "his body had no more control than if she held a lizard by the tail". These references bespeak the richness of Apache culture while contributing as well to the gripping plot.The plot of "Apache Fire" thickens as the handsome American officer Brent McQuade (named for Marian McQuade, the founder of National Grandparents' Day) investigates the mystery of the murdered father of the bosomy heroine and comes into contact with the man she is supposed to marry, Scorpion. Scorpion sets up a conflict common in Steelian works, between a woman's duty to her tribe and her love for a white man with bulging pectoral muscles. The abundant yearning between Brent and Meadowlark promises 400 pages of the kind of wild adventure that can only be brought out by yearning and Apache half-breeds.All in all, this novel presents an overwhelming vision of the complexities surrounding both the Native American cultural identity and lust. I highly recommend it to anyone with an appreciation for quality literature.
