Excellent introduction to current theory in sociocultural anthropology
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 19 years ago
This is an excellent introduction to current theory in sociocultural anthropology. It is not encyclopedic or complete but it exposes the reader to some of the hot areas. Some of these essays are not so mainstream within sociocultural anthropology, such as Pascal Boyer's contribution on cultural transmission of cognitive representations drawing on interdisciplinary culture and cognition research. However it is a valuable contribution as this is a fruitful area of research that many anthropologists are oblvious to- mistakingly thinking that cognitive anthropology is dated. Others deal with some of the most central issues in current sociocultural anthropology such as the contributions of Catherine Lutz and Donald Nonini, Aihwa Ong, and James Carrier and Daniel Miller. The essays may take challenge some readers but anyone who wants to understand the cutting edge of anthropology better get used to it. This is probobly one of the better places to start.
