His early education was unremarkable; he struggled academically but found solace in art, music, and acting. After attending Jones' West Monmouth Boys' School and Cowbridge Grammar School, Hopkins enrolled at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff, graduating in 1957. He later trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London from 1961 to 1963, where he honed his craft and began his journey toward becoming one of Britain's most celebrated actors.
