Useful information sans the verbosity

This is a book meant for programmers who are already comfortable with the basic language features and would like to enhance their repertoire without having to toil away at a 1000+ page tome. The content of the book can be best described as a collection of tutorials on the more esoteric language features presented in an easy to assimilate manner. Most of the individual tutorials can be found at http://www.devx.com/ .

Great for intermediate/advanced C++ programers

This book is great for intermediate/advanced C++ programmers. Very readable and informative. I'd recommend it even if your compiler of choice is not terribly standard compliant, i.e. Visual C++. You'll learn more about the standard and refresh your memory on some things about C++ you've forgotten.

An Amazing Find!

This is definately a 5-star book. Before finding this book, I'd looked high and low for a real *advanced* C++ book. Most C++ books are not worth the price for someone who's already an expert in C++. This book covers everything--all the details and nuances of RTTI, templates, namespaces--not just what can be done with the language, but the how and why. Even a seasoned C++ guru will be able to learn a thing or two from Kalev. But the book's format is easy an accessible, even for an intermediate user. Overall, it's great! I can't recommend this one enough!

A Real Gem!

ANSI/ISO C++ Professional Programmer's Handbook is one of the best C++ books I've read. Having read it cover to cover, I can conclude that the author is very knowledgeable, clear and concise. Some of the chapters are real eye openers, e.g., "RTTI", "namespaces" and "optimization" chapters. True to the idiom that a good programmer knows not only the how but also the why, these chapters provide practical advice as well as firm theoretical background and "behind the scenes" insights of the underlying C++ mechanisms. Other chapters provide an excellent description of language features and terminology (e.g., what is the difference between dynamic binding and polymorphism? The rationale behind operator overloading, principles of OOD and OOP, etc.). All in all, it appears that Kalev has managed to keep a very good balance between practice and theory (e.g., explaining why the standards committee chose one strategy rather than another, or why certain features were deprecated). Furthermore, some of the chapters provide information that isn't available elsewhere, for instance, how to combine legacy C code in a C++ app or which features are likely to be added to C++ in the future. A special chapter is dedicated to features that were recently added to C++, such as function try blocks, exception specification in function prototypes, initialization of const static class members, placement new, covariant return types and many others. In many ways, I found this book more innovative and advanced than Scott Meyer's "Effective C++", which by itself, makes this book one of a kind.

excellent introduction of new c++ for a c++ programmer

A comprehensive and in-depth treatment of ANSI C++ concepts, constructs, and features. Kalev is readable, competent, and detailed with plenty of practical, easy examples. I would recommend this book to anyone with prior knowledge of C++ who would like to learn the new and improved C++.
