Maxfield's novel transports the reader into the lives of several New Hammpshireites who have all the foibles expected of a small village where not much can happen without everyone knowing about it. It has a sensual quality about it, simply because the characters are inflicted with the strengths and weaknesses found in all of us. It was like reading about close friends and acquaintenances who have crossed our path along life's way. This novel is totally unlike Maxfield's earlier novel, Legacy of A Spy, which happens to be an exceptional spy novel that tells it like it was and, one assumes, still is.
