Book Overview

First published in 1970, "Another Part of the House" is a simple, direct, intimate story of family life in a small Texas town during the Depression. Told by 10-year-old Larry Morrison, it reflects Larry's uncertainty as he sees the security of his family--mother, father, and 15 year-old brother, Tad--threatened by immediate forces such as his father's ne'er-do-well brother, Uncle Calvin, and by larger, more serious adversaries--the Depression, the drought, the dust and, most incomprehensible of all, death. How the family deals with them while preserving its own strength and unity is the story.

Nostalgic look at small town Texas

A well-written look at a small town in North Texas during the Depression. The story is entertaining although some developments were too predictable. The author does a great job of capturing the lives of his characters and the impact of the Depression on them, and of conveying the "feel" of living in such a place at that time. The book will be especially appealing to anyone who grew up or lives in or near the Texas Panhandle or other parts of the Plains.

Another Part Of The House

I first read this book more than 20 years ago and was completely mesmerized by its style and story. I still have my well worn copy, which I have reread several times over the years. There has never been a book I have read that has transported me so completely and touched me so deeply as this. From the well written description of small town Texas life in the early part of the 1900's, to the heartfelt truths about family and love, this book is, in my estimation, worthy to be called an American Classic.
