Mitch Ballentine is awakened by his roommate to see an enormous woven, blanket-like energy field in the sky. As the people of the neighborhood gather, they see a strange fog washing down toward the town from the horizon. Deducing that this is an alien attack, they panic. The fog takes them all and they fall unconscious. Everyone wakes up, shakes the cobwebs, and celebrates their being alive. It doesn't take long, however, before they begin to act strangely. Suddenly everybody takes their own lives - while smiling - as if their minds are under control. Mitch and the few other survivors realize aliens are exterminating humans by making the population of the entire planet kill themselves. Practically every human being is dead by their own hand. Before long, though, the aliens realize some of the humans have resisted the suicide command and are still alive. They try harder to break through. Resistance is tougher for the survivors. And time is running out for them: the aliens' structures are slowly materializing on Earth, which means the aliens will soon physically arrive to take over the Earth. Then things get worse. The aliens are now commanding the survivors to hunt and kill the other survivors that the aliens can't get through to. Mitch and his companions don't know how much longer they can fight off the assassins and the aliens' commands. Can they find a way to fight the aliens and stop their arrival?
