An honest look at keeping perspective

I enjoy reading this book with kids. Many can really identify with the viscerally emotional experience of spiraling anger. One child said, "Well, where's the part where he feels happy again?" That's one of the points of the book, that it's not always possible to snap out of it, or cheer up. Anger is raw and real, and this book doesn't offer an unrealistic happy ending, but rather the learning experience of seeing Arthur gain perspective on how far he let his anger take him. Very effective illustrations. Recommended.

AN OFTEN OVERLOOKED SUBJECT

An often overlooked subject, anger, is addressed in Angry Arthur by Hiawyn Oram, brilliantly drawn by Satoshi Kitamura. Not allowed to stay up as late as he wishes, Arthur becomes as angry as he has ever been. Then, as he falls asleep, he make a surprising discovery.

Beatriz and Constantin's review

Constantin, my 7 year old son, tends to loose his temper... This book really opened his eyes about self control. "How could a little boy generate such a mess?" he wondered and laughed... We explained to him that sometimes your bad temper can ruin your day and other's and it does not take you anywhere, in the end, you do not even remember how everything started! All that chaos and energy for nothing! Constantin loved those last pages where Arthur is sitting on is bed in outer space... We read this book in Spanish and liked it so much that now want to order it in English.

A useful book for parents, educators, and children.

I'm a preschool teacher of 3's, 4's, and 5 year old children and this particular book really helped teach the children to identify their own angry feelings. The pictures really help illustrate exactly how angry the title character, Arthur, feels and how his anger can escalate to enormous proportions. We shared this book at circle time one afternoon and it generated a lot of responses from the children. They easily identified with how Arthur felt when he was angry, and how hard it can be sometimes to calm themselves. It was simple enough for them to understand, well written and illustrated. I highly recommend this book to all parents and educators as well.
