Rise Above

Finished this book for the 2nd time, reading it more intently and savoring (not entirely everything) the details this time. It brings to mind a minister of a church I once attended. He used to admonish us to "rise above." Adeline and her family surely did rise above Julia and her ilk. I strongly feel that her mother did her very best to help from the other side. The 'savoring' is of Adeline Kulig Puccini's rich detail and of painting pictures with words so precise it felt like I was there as a silent observer in the same milieu. Maybe it was partly because we are so close in age and the farm details rang so true for that era. I will tell my children that if they want to 'feel' what my childhood was like, read "Angels In My Valley" and edit out the brutality. I have had many hurts in my long life and carried those hurts around like saved up stamps. I wonder daily if I'm still playing the 'victim' role. Somehow the Kulig children and Adeline's father "rose above" and forgave Julia time and again. It is a beautiful story of triumph over evil. I have read many a 'victim' story, but never one like this. I'm inspired to "rise above."

An Inspirational Tale of Familiy and Personal Strength

This true story of how Adeline and her brothers and sisters were able to overcome the potentially devastating effects of an uncaring, abusive step-parent was notable because it stands in contrast to what "modern" psychology may say about the subject. Rather than wallowing in the emotional morass that an endless contemplation of victimhood would offer them, Adeline and her siblings used the gifts of togetherness, humor, and compassion that God offered them to each find their avenues to their respective successes in life. Adeline pursued her studies against tough odds and achieved educational heights that belied her humble, if not impossible, beginnings toward fulfilling her dreams. This book, which I heard about because of its focus on overcoming an abusive step-parent, will be recommended to others by me mostly because of what it says about using the tough times in our lives to steel us. That message and an incredible work ethic frames the ladder that Adeline used to climb her way to success.
