Plot, Characters and Emotional Depth - it's all there

"Angels in Disguise" is a book rich in emotions. When I was younger, I liked mystery books that had complex plots. The more difficult the mystery was to solve (given all the clues), the more I liked the book. In time, however, I developed a taste for books with likeable characters, interesting emotional developments and deep emotional conflict... as well as a good plot. "Angels in Disguise" has them all. A quick plot summary: The book is 8th in the series. Hawkman is hired to find somebody's missing wife. The wife and husband are separated, though the husband still picks up the bills, possibly because he wants to provide a comfortable home for his daughter. As the trail grows hotter and the red herrings mount, Hawkman is threatened to drop the case or the child will be hurt. Meanwhile, his private affairs are complicated by the news of his much loved wife's illness....

another great success

Hawkman is getting a new assignment when Paul Ryan walks into his office. His wife has been missing for four days now and Paul wants to hire Hawkman to find her. He and his wife live separate, they have a daughter, Tiffany Lynn who is ten years old. Tiffany stays with her grandmother Delia during the time that her mom is missing. There seem to be some odd things going on; Paul and Carlotta lived separate, but weren't divorced. Paul still kept on paying for the bills and kept his wife and daughter pretty comfortable. But Carlotta seemed to have a lifestyle of her own; she wanted Tiffany to wear clothes that were far beyond clothes for children. She also approved that Tiffany is allowed to wear make-up. This seemed to be the reason for all sorts of conflicts between Tiffany's grandmom and Carlotta. Then things are getting a turn, when Hawkman finds out that Carlotta might have a drug-problem. When he later discovers a suitcase (that was missing from her bedroom) filled with new clothes beneath her house, he suspects foul play. Besides, Carlotta has been missing for almost two weeks at that time... it really doesn't look good. In the middle of his investigation, Hawkman also gets some problems of his own to digest; when his wife Jennifer gets sick. They don't know what is going on, but Jennifer never ever gets sick. He worries about her, because he really loves her so much. Again, I loved reading this book from Betty Sullivan La Pierre. But then again, she is my absolute favourite author when it comes down to ebooks. She knows how to let you think one thing, while something completely different happens. You feel the tension and you keep on reading and reading because you really want to know what happens next. And each time you'll get surprised! Angels in disguise is the 8th book in the Hawkman Series; I'd say it's another great success and I can't wait for the next book to read! -reviewed by Sylvie for Euro-Reviews

Deeply touching, terrific novel

This is one of the novels that read like a real life story. It's my second book in the Hawkman series, the first one being Dirty Diamonds, which was fast-paced and enthralling. But Angels in Disguise is an emotional tour de force. Indeed it is hard to concentrate on the business on hand -- better said on the who-done-it aspect) when one's beloved wife is ill, is undergoing so many tests, and they face an uncertain tomorrow. Yet, ah yes, life goes on, and Hawkman has to do his best to do justice to his calling. Recommended not only as a pot-boiler, but as an inspirational read.

Ms. La Pierre Puts the M in Mystery

In one of Hawkman's toughest cases to date, he struggles to find answers and worries about his wife, Jennifer, as she undergoes cancer treatments. His life has taken a sudden sharp turn down a road of darkness, and he needs all the angels in disguise he can get to light his way. Carlotta Ryan has up and disappeared, and no one has a clue where she is. The last anyone heard of her she was headed out of town with the girls for a few days, leaving behind her daughter, Tiffany, and estranged husband Paul who becomes an automatic suspect along with his mother who didn't like Carlotta much. Paul Ryan calls on Hawkman to find his wife and bring her back to her daughter who misses her very much. The suspects begin to mount as Hawkman digs deeper. But someone doesn't want Carlotta found and threatens Tiffany's life if Hawkman doesn't back off. Ms. La Pierre puts the M in Mystery. No matter how I strung the pieces together, I couldn't solve this baffling case. Written with a soft heart and a strong hand, Angels in Disguise is sure to please any mystery fan, and endear Hawkman a little more to your hearts.

Great tension & emotion!

Ms. LaPierre's writing shows a new maturity with her latest installment in the Hawkman series. Tom Casey, aka Hawkman, her much loved character, has a new case, but he is finding himself distracted by his wife's sudden medical problems. It is hard to concentrate on a thorny problem while Jennifer is undergoing a battery of frightening tests in order to determine the cause of her ominous symptoms. Hawkman can't help but worry, and he vows to be with her every step of the way, no matter how difficult it becomes. The love between Jennifer and Hawkman just keeps growing and it seems to suffuse every page they share. Hawkman's new case involves a missing woman. When Paul, the woman's husband, explains his problem, he is very distraught, despite the months of separation he and Carlotta have been through recently. Under other circumstances, Hawkman might think this was simply a wayward wife who has run off with another man --- except for the daughter. How could Carlotta leave her child without explanation? Would a mother supposedly so devoted to her daughter walk away and never look back? But the alternative --- abduction, possibly even murder --- sends chills down Hawkman's spine. It is the one solution to the problem he does not want to find. If only he can figure out what was really going on between the missing Carlotta and her husband Paul, and the odd relationship with her mother-in-law, he might make some sense of the clues. In the meantime, he has Jennifer's health foremost on his mind. Then, the threatening messages start showing up on his answering machine. The voice, while distorted, sounds vaguely familiar. Hawkman decides not to take any chances and redoubles his vigilance. Even with all the care he takes to ensure his personal safety and that of his clients, things don't always go according to plan. And when things fall apart, they fall apart in a big way. This is one nasty felon, with an old-fashioned motive so uncompromising it will give you goose bumps. Cold-blooded predators like this terrify the most stalwart among us, for there is no seeing this one coming. Packed with emotion born of personal experience, ANGELS IN DISGUISE is Ms. LaPierre's best yet.
