Angels Among Us: The Fabulous J. Oliver Black

Evelyn "Betty" Howard writes lovingly about her stunning experiences with Yogacharya Oliver Black. She also writes about others who knew Black and experienced his powerful expanded consciousness. J. Oliver Black (Yogacharya Oliver) was a direct disciple of the renowned yogi Paramahansa Yogananda, author of the best-selling classic book Autobiography of a Yogi. Yogananda was the first yogi to live in the West for a long period of time (over 30 years) and inspired millions with in his nationwide yoga classes and through his organization, Self-Realization Fellowship. Yogacharya Oliver was a successful Detroit businessman and inventor who knew and worked with the famous people of his day, including architect Frank Lloyd Wright and millionaire/inventor Howard Hughes. At one time, Black was the largest private landowner in the state of Michigan. After meeting with and studying under Yogananda, he began his own classes, which he held at the Detroit Institute of Arts and which attracted students nationwide. He eventually founded an 800-acre yoga retreat in northern Michigan, Song of the Morning, which continues to operate today. Yogacharya's personality, love, and wisdom comes through these pages and is a testament to the inspiring life he lived and shared with all of us.
