I just received a signed copy of "Angelic Force" a few days ago. Actually I had read its Chinese version, and only ordered the English copy because I want to read certain passages in Marilyn's own words. I also want to keep a signed copy in my room for, having had a personal connection with the author, I feel the physical presence of the book should remind me of her warmth and kindness. I have to say that the book did not disappoint me in the least. My favorite passage is the one in which Marilyn recalls her Grandpa Samuel and the long, slow walks he took her along on. The intimate nature of the passage virtually transferred me back in time to the numerous walks my friend used to take me on, and I remembered how much I had enjoyed the time. I did a psychic reading with Marilyn over the phone on Jan 18, 2008. It was for my beloved friend and mentor, Jess, whom I adore but lost to death last fall. I had been worried that my friend would not come to the reading, but Marilyn assured me he did. Marilyn generously spent an hour relating my friends' words to me and interjecting her own comments and suggestions where she saw appropriate. I found these words, comments and suggestions valuable and the experience gratifying. Some of the words did not make sense when we were doing the reading but did make sense later on when I had more time to reflect on them. What impressed me most is that during the reading my friend said he had touched my face. When I said I couldn't feel it, Marilyn said half-jokingly, "But this is your problem, not his." Indeed, what could he do? Then on the nights of Feb 6 and Feb 8, I felt my bed shaking while I was sleeping. The first time I woke up and the shaking stopped immediately. The next morning I asked, but there had been no earthquake and my parents had not felt anything. The second time my bed shook, I woke up and thanked my friend, feeling rather sure it was he coming to visit, and the shaking continued for another couple of seconds. (Feb 6 this year was the Chinese New Year's Eve, so I prayed to my friend to join us in the family get-together.) It appears to me that my friend came to respond to my words that I could not feel his touch. He came to prove he had been near me; he came to encourage me not to grieve, for he was, as he had always been, with me. From my communications with Marilyn and her daughter, Jane, I noticed the difference between them. I wrote an email message to Jane and, sensing my deep sorrow, Jane tried to comfort me when I called her to make an appointment with Marilyn. She said she hoped the psychic reading would help to put colors back into my life. That was so sweet. Marilyn, on the other hand, did not deal with my grief itself. Instead, she built a connection between my friend and me, and the way she conducted the reading made it seem as if it had not been a once-in-a-lifetime event, but only an ordinary occurrence, as if death had not been an end but only an interruption. Fascinating Story

This book chronicles the experiences of psychic Marilyn Raphael. She is not a "world famous" psychic, nor does she likely care to be one. And that doesn't really matter, because this book is full of interesting and at times amazing experiences that she has had. The book's chapters talk about her spirit teachers, including a Chinese medicine woman from the 1500s, Ernest Hemingway, and Eileen Jeanette Garrett, a well respected 20th century medium. Reading about these spirit teachers makes them seem much more like human beings than "mysterious spirit entities." I especially liked one comment about Eileen Garrett, who tells Ms Raphael that she is "initiating a celestial call" when she wishes to talk with Ms Raphael. As someone who has had a number of personal psychic experiences, I could relate in some ways to the initial fear and reluctance (that the book mentions) in accepting one's spirit teachers as actual entities and not one's own imagination. However, after enough experiences of certain events happening that were not coincidences, you realize that they're not your imagination and your spirit teachers are here to guide you. Besides the chapters full of interesting stories and experiences, there's also a short appendix on psychic exercises the reader can do, to increase their psychic abilities, along with automatic writings and excerpts from interviews of clients testifying to Ms Raphael's abilities. I've read quite a few books on this topic and found this one to be among the better ones I've seen.

We are spirits in human bodies

Over the years I have read many biographies and autobiographies of famous psychics and mediums of the past and present. Some rang true and some didn't. This one does have the ring of truth and sincerity. However, the subject for the first time isn't a world famous psychic. She is instead a much more representative type- she is an everyday psychic medium not known of much beyond her circle of friends and students. This strikes me as much more representative of true psychics than the "celebrity" examples. After all, in traditional societies there were always those few members that could communicate with spirits- they were recognized as serving a vital natural function in the community. Such people still exist even though in the modern world they were often not appreciated or respected. This woman isn't into sensationalism and self-promotion. Much of the time she doesn't even charge for her gift. She simply wants to use her special and hard won gifts to help people- people on both sides of the veil. This is her life story of learning, growth, and service. While this book is subtitled as referring to a "modern medium" the subject strikes me as a very traditional sort of medium in the best sense. The refusal to take money, automatic writing, trance mediumship, even "table tipping" all have very old roots in the United States. In fact, nothing could be more "American" than spiritualism for it really started here before the civil war and spread to other parts of the world. This medium is in that tradition. She had long been honing her abilities on her own before the "New Age" movement came along. Nor is this book an effort to capitalize on the current fad of "ghost whispering." In fact, there is no sense at all of being sold any rigid set of beliefs of teachings. The only real message is that death is not the end- our spirits survive. This does tend to put the rest of life into better perspective. This is really a very well written and organized volume. There are several pages of appropriate illustrations. There all also three appendices: the first is a short course in psychic development, the second is a example of the automatic writing received from the spirits over the years, and the third is a collection of client interviews testifying to her abilities. There is both a bibliography as well as an index. Finally, do not be put off by the fact that this medium's helping spirits claim to be such famous personalities as James (brother of Yeshua), Eileen Garrett (famous medium and author), and Ernest Hemingway. Remember, we are all spirits briefly inhabiting physical bodies. As spirits we are all interconnected on the other side- both through soul clusters and through the creator himself. These interconnections reach through past, present, and future, as well as through different incarnations, simultaneously. The true nature of being is far more mysterious than we credit.
