A slave, named Androcles, flees from his master and escapes into the hills where he encounters a lion, in pain, with a thorn in its paw. After becoming aware that the lion has no interest in attacking him, Androcles approaches the lion and bravely pulls the thorn from its paw. The pair part ways and on his way back to the city, Androcles finds a valuable ring which he tries to sell to a merchant, but is promptly arrested for theft and thrown in jail. He is sentenced to die by the court, and is taken to the arena to be thrown to the lions.
