JR Conway is a good man by any definition-a loving and devoted husband and father without a trace of guile in him. On a September weekend, he and his brother Warren are camping in Wyoming's Snowy Range Mountains when they are awakened in the middle of the night by a call for help from a neighboring camper searching for her friend. When JR locates the missing young woman at a nearby lake and tries to rescue her from drowning, he prays for the courage and stamina to deal with the icy cold water and that he will be able to save her. Hours later, as he silently gives thanks for his answered prayer, he is unaware that before the day is over he and his young son Troy will face a devastating personal loss that will change their lives. Over the next several months, JR struggles with unyielding grief, while at the same time trying to be a source of strength and comfort for Troy. When he has an unwarranted dispute with two men who later prey on an innocent elderly couple, it adds to his growing awareness that danger can lurk where it is least expected, and that some people possess a wickedness he finds unfathomable. As he begins to wonder whether good and evil are deliberate choices or simply exist at random, his evolving cynicism starts to display in his demeanor and alarms those closest to him.
