And They Survived is a true story, written as Historical Fiction based on fact. What does that mean? This is a journey which started in the Wurttemberg area of Germany in 1709. It involves the authors 6th Great Grandparents in their quest to come to the American Colonies. This opportunity attracted many thousands of Germans and became known as The Palatine Emigration. Johann Jost Proper, his wife Anna Elizabeth and their three children, Barbara age 10, Johann Frederick age 8 and Johann Pieter age 6, embarked on an 18-month journey, 6 months on board a ship crossing the Atlantic. They finally settled in a place called Hunterstown, along the Hudson River and about 100 miles north of Manhattan, New York. The Historical Fiction part of this book is the authors attempt at adding fictitious characters and events to give possible scenarios as to what things these travelers may have encountered. Along the way on this journey, there will be some individuals who were real people and some historical events that did occur. These will be listed on the author's page.
