Like every year, after school is over, Bianca and Benedetta, together with their mother, move into their grandfather's country house lying along the railway line. They spend part of their holidays there, eager to listen to war stories Grandpa will read from an old notebook he had received from the very hands of the protagonist, a little girl by the name of Sassie. It's not the first time Grandpa embarks on such reading sessions, but this time he seems determined to get his act together and to go full circle on Sassie's and her family's story in that fateful Autumn of 1943. His narration, gradually building up as days spent with his granddaughters go by, will develop into a tale of long months of wandering, during which the little girl and her kin, now turned refugees, will go from place to place, trying to avoid bombardments by the Americans as well as deportations by the Germans. Until the day liberation comes. But this finale will be punctuated by unexpected twists, much to the delight of Bianca and Benedetta.
