Spellbinding reading!

Once again I take my hat off to the cyber world for allowing so many new talents to rise to be examined. Alternative publishing has broken down the barriers that once restricted the view of those poor talented writers ignored by the big publishing houses. I know, you're tired of hearing me sing the praises of the new pioneers, but they bring you the likes of ANCIENT ANGER. Deep, thought provoking, and smart, Matthews paints a visual picture of the Yukatan, the Mayans and their past. This book has a zeal that renews my faith in imagination and the hope we will have new superstars besides the...well...you know who they are. ANGER drew me into the minds of characters so real I felt I knew them. Clarice Starling became my cyber fantasy after HANNIBAL, and now I have a new friend in Carlos, the murdering drug dealer. I wanted to hate this Main character, but then Matthews took me back to a dusty little village in Colombia and made me understand him. Every character is this book is alive, genuine and demands we know them. The depth of research that was necessary to bring this book to fruition is mind boggling. Matthews leaves nothing ignored and the reader finishes with a sure understanding of what the politics of the archaelogical field and what drives the men and women to dig in the earth for the past. Nothing is left to guesswork and the story carries you along like a crashing wave. What a beginning, the hook is a gasper, and the finish leaves you exhuasted. What a debut. Matthews is something new and great. Ancient prophesies, cults and murder, this novel has the makings of a block buster. My only regret is the people that make could this a known jewel will ignore this book, shame on them and their closed minded ways. Wake up you big boys, get a grip and look at ANCIENT ANGER. Out of my ten possible ink-blots, I give Matthews and his debut novel and 8.75. Dont stop an write on Tom, what's next? This book begs for a sequel.

It's great, and I know the author!

What can I say, Ancient Anger rocks. Tom asked me for months if I had read his book, I just kept making excuses. So I finally ordered it, read it and loved it! What a ride, this book gives it all. Sex and violence and dooms day cults and beautiful girls laying in the sun in Cancun! All I can say is WOW! I knew Tom had an imagination (I've read a some of his short stories) but I had no idea he was so good a story teller. There is so much that goes on and so many twists and turns, I thought he could never bring it all together in the end...boy does he. Nothing is left unexplained and it leaves you begging for more. His dialog is so real, you can swear you hear the conversations. Funny thing, the book was so visual, that when I was explaining the plot to a friend I remembered the scenes as though I had seen a movie, not read a book. Speaking of which, any Hollywood types who read this should snatch it up, this would make an awsome movie! I recommend ANCIENT ANGER to the whole world, really, and that would also help Tom's bank account! Seriously, buy it, read it, you'll love it! Right on Tom and congratulations! (By the way, I got to see his new one coming out...it's gonna' be great!)

In a word, AWSOME!

Call me cheap, and I am, but I have taken to reading books on line when I can. Many sites offer that as a teaser, and if you are willing to stand the strain on the eyes, you can read the entire novel in PDF format. It was my intention to do this with Ancient Anger. But, after I was 50 or so pages into this book, I just had to have it. First of all, I love the Mayan history and it was the basic discription of the book plot that hooked me. This novel is more than just a story that takes place in tne Yucatan, Ancient Anger transcends time and reality and takes the reader into a deep and scary possibility of the world's future. Great characters, incredible plot developement and intense concepts. Matthews is deep, smart and a wonderful story teller. If a cheap guy like me can pass up a chance to read a book for free and buy it so I can say I own this novel, then anyone who normally buys their books should get it...now. I'm hoping Matthews is not a one shot author, I certainly would love to read some other works by this gifted writer. There is sex and there is violence, there is also some gut wrenching turns to this story that makes you wonder if Matthews has some unresolved issues, but that is what makes this story so great. It is NOT a format novel, the action is NOT predictable and the charcaters are not two dimentional. I have scanned the net and found nothing else from this author, there has to be more. Is there? What else have you done Tom? What's next? In the mean time I'll reread Ancient Anger...it's that good.

Best I've read this year!

As novels go, this last year has been a great disapointment on the forefront publishing scene. In an attempt to find alternative venues for new authors, I ventured into the realm of cyber space and came across iUniverse.com. There I discovered ANCIENT ANGER. It took nearly a month for me to get my book once I ordered it, but it was worth the wait. Thomas Mathhews has created a encompassing novel that lays a new foundation for the spiritual and thrillers of today. Read this book.

Fun, action packed and fast paced!

Ancient Anger surprised me. When it was referred to me, I previewed at the publisher's page. (toExcel.com) After the first page I was expecting a bloody, shock filled story using the acient Mayan's as a thin backdrop to justify some typical modern, violent fiction. Boy was I wrong. I ordered the book and read the entire 350 pages in four days. Matthews uses the ancient Mayan culture as vehicle for a thought provoking and smart story of mankind's fear of mortality and his need for reassurance of a life after death. The characters were interesting and the plot kept my attention. This book was well researched and wonderfully crafted. Besides the exciting premise, I found the book to be informative and enlightening about who and what the Mayans were. This was quite an undertaking for a debut novel and Matthews handled it very well. There was just enough sex and violence to make it interesting, but the story yielded a sensitivity I find lacking in most of the fiction these days. I was capivated by Padre Mio, the old Mayan priest, and was unable to put the book down through the last hundred pages. I figured out the ending before it came, but it made no difference in my ability to enjoy this book! I highly recommend Ancient Anger to anyone looking for a smart and fresh thriller with a heart. I hope to see more from Matthews.
