Mayflower Pilgrim, Edward Winslow, and a linguist from England, John Eliot, partner to produce the first Bible printed on American soil. Eliot translated the Bible into the Wampanoag Indians' unwritten language while Winslow raised funds by petitioning Parliament, back in England, to pass the Act for the Promoting and Propagating of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in New England. This act passed in 1649 birthing the first missionary society established in England. This society provided a printing press, printing materials, and a fully-paid printer to print John Eliot's Indian Bible. This Bible was printed and distributed to the Wampanoag Indians in 1663.
