A Good Book to Start With

The Anchor Complete Embroidery Course is not for anyone with embroidery experience, it is, however, for people who do not have any experience at all. If you know any embroidery, or you have forgotten some, then perhaps you should choose a different volume, but if you truly know nothing about the art this isn't a bad book. The directions are wonderfully clear, there are tons of excellent pictures and the book goes through types of frames for stitching with, the pros and cons of each, ways to transfer patterns and how to frame your finished work. The book teaches over 20 different simple stitches which are divided into five sections. The stem and outline stitch section which covers stitches such as couching, the coral stitch, the holbein stitch, back stitch and stem stitch. The section devoted to knots explains the classic French knot, as well as basic seeding and more complex knots like the four-legged knot and the Bullion. The Chain chapter gives the basic chain stitch and the lazy-daisy. It also has instructions for the cabled chain stitch. The book also covers filing stitches, satin and split filling as well as the fishbone stitch are all covered. Borders and Bands gives the reader things as basic as the blanket stitch and Chinese stitch. There is also directions for the feather stitch and two variations on it. What I liked most about this book was the fact that the first chapter taught five basic stitches, French knot, Blanket, Satin, Lazy-daisy and Backstitch. Then the second part of the sections offered patterns which only used those five stitches, so that you could immediately try to create something of your own. The sections reviewed the stitches introduced and then covered five new stitches and had patterns which used both the new stitches and any older stitches. By working a pattern from each chapter you could learn a total of 25 different embroidery stitches and would be ready to go on to more complex patters or designs. The patterns in the book are a mixed bag, but in each chapter I found at least one that I liked enough to work it myself. The instructions in this book are so clear, it seems that they over come any failing of the designs included.

A great book for the beginner Embroiderer

This is a great book for anybody just starting to learn embroidery - and for those who are experienced and want some fast, fun projects to do. The book is exceedingly well set out - and the projects start from easy stitchery to more complex projects. There is lots of practical advice in it - from transferring designs to fabric, to framing your project. Scattered throughout the book are also some great tips. The stitch diagrams are well set out - and a joy to use and easy to follow. All in all - this is a "must have" book for all embroiderers and one that will be passed on through the generations.
