Just before I got this book I had a conversation with someone with family roots in Galicia. Older members of my own family had definite views about "galitzianers," not all favorable. The book makes it clear what an insane ethnic stewpot Galicia was. Its ethnic groups -- basically Poles, Ukrainians and Jews -- all hated one another, but had managed to coexist uneasily until World War I cleared the way for waves of multiway genocidal violence. Of course it was more complicated than that: within each ethnic bloc were multiple factions, some of which were at one another's throats. One comes away from this well-crafted history with a very pessimistic "take" on the human race.
