LANGUAGE ARTS / CREATIVE WRITING / FOLKLORE Books for Growing Minds present "ANANSI is ANANSE ," a delightful interactive folktale-drama (story) that will engage both the reader and all who have gathered around for the telling of this tale. Initially published as Ananse Makes It So , this edition continues with our mission to publish books and articles that encourage family time and meaningful play. Through our publications, Books for Growing Minds is dedicated to supporting family literacy and healthy social interaction through the art of storytelling. This engaging story met much success when the author first wrote it in Simon and Schuster's bestselling anthology on African/African American storytelling and favored by children's librarians, university-level Drama and Literature classes, and children's theater. The illustrations (photographed plates for this edition) were done by artist-nutritionist Verena Durrmeier. She perfectly renders the author's idea of depicting "non-threatening looking, cute, dancing spiders that even arachnophobes would not mind reading about." Available in French and Spanish translations, ANANSI is ANANSE is a "let's do" story that promises to be interactive fun for all. Books for Growing Minds "ANANSI is ANANSE is one, powerful, little book. Not only does it so accurately and playfully depict the behavior of Ananse the spider-man, an ancient, timeless, folktale character, the book's Cultural Enrichment section after the story is rich with engaging information that will appeal to educators." L. Logan, SUMMARY: Rabbit decides to visit his friend Anansi-the-spider whom he hasn't seen in quite a while. Wanting to celebrate their seemingly forever friendship, Rabbit invites Anansi to join him in making a drum. From his cozy hammock, Anansi refuses with excuses of being too sick to get involved with drum-making. Alone, Rabbit works hard at making his "friendship" drum. While Rabbit is resting from the day's hard work at drum-making, he soon finds Anansi playing his drum, the very same drum he was supposedly "too sick" to help make. Anansi ends up in an embarrassing situation, one that we all may come face to face with from time to time.
