Analytical and Antibacterial Study of Dioica Pepper Essential Oil

The plant species Pimenta dioica Lindl, known as allspice, is a tree 6 to 10 m tall, belonging to the Myrtaceae family and originating in Central America and western India. In Brazil, the plant is found on a large scale in the state of Bahia. Its leaves contain an essential oil that is highly valued on the international market due to its high eugenol content (the main compound), which is widely used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. In this study, the essential oil was extracted from the leaves of Pimenta dioica Lindl by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger system. In the application of the essential oil of the species Pimenta dioica Lindl and the eugenol standard as bactericidal agents, the Bauer-Kirby method was used for the bacteria Bacillus cereus, Serratia marcescens, Listeria monocytogenes, Enterococcus faecalis, Salmonella thyphi and Chromobacterium violaceum, and the antibiotics Penicillin, Ampicillin, Cefotaxime, Vancomycin, Cefoxitin, Erythromycin, Gentamicin, Novobiocin and Tetracycline for comparison. This research shows that the essential oil and eugenol standard were more effective than the antibiotics.
