Analysis of Flooding in Urban Areas

Nature undergoes many transformations due to natural phenomena and, in particular, those caused by human activity, which often cause direct and indirect damage to the environment and society, including: silting, flooding, pollution, deforestation, among others. Therefore, in order to understand the causes and effects of the Ibirapuit River floods in the city of Alegrete, a local socio-environmental assessment was conducted. Initially, quantitative surveys were conducted on the environmental, material, and social damage caused by the floods between April 2016 and April 2017. Subsequently, mitigation measures, action plans, and changes in urban planning were identified that the civil defence and city hall implemented in order to minimise the disruption caused by the Ibirapuit River floods.Data from this period recorded 219 homeless families and an estimated loss of 10 million reais. This data is important for the municipality to adopt preventive measures that will reduce the damage caused to society, as unfortunately the Ibirapuit River floods year after year.
