An Unforgiveable Exchange

The very idea of someone selling their baby is beyond most peoples' imagination. Yet there is a ready market for healthy white infants. People with money that are desperate for children will go to any means to get one. This is a story about baby-selling and the many twists and turns it can take. There have been major changes in society over the past 70 years. There once was a time when young girls who found themselves unexpectedly pregnant would work with a non-profit agency to place their child in an adoptive family. Other girls went to live in a group setting for unwed girls or spent a year caring for an elderly aunt. by the end of the 1970's, there were few if any white infants available for adoption. At the same time, many women were deciding later in life to start a family or even more recently same-sex couples were marrying and wanted children. These social changes opened the door for some unscrupulous people to take advantage of both young pregnant women and couples wanting what used to be called a Gerber baby. This is a story about a woman who decides halfway through the process that she wants to keep her baby rather than sell it. Her decision starts a chain reaction of events leading to death and baby abduction. A journalist and a detective are thrown together and become unconventional partners seeking to end this criminal activity. The young women are enticed into thinking it is better for them to sell their babies but quickly realize they can't change their minds once they made a commitment. The story starts -Mr. M handed her a handful of bills and watched as she counted them in front of him. He smiled at her apparent lack of trust and actually appreciated that side of her character. He wanted a person working for him to be careful, deliberate, and not trusting of anyone, even him."You'll find all the money is there. There's $5,000 as a commission for recruiting the candidate and another extra $2,000 for caring for the infant until the transfer day occurs. I can promise you it will occur within a week. I have another customer waiting for a baby so you need to recruit more candidates. You can immediately start working on this assignment and I'll pay you the same fee.""Can I ask how you emotionally handle taking a woman's life to obtain a baby for another couple?" asked the woman."Why," said Mr. M. "Is it bothering you?""Not really. I like money, but everyone is different. How do you handle it?""Some people would say by killing a young mother I'm the angel of death but I look at the outcome. As with this contract I see myself as the angel of hope for the men who are adopting a beautiful, healthy, white infant. Without me, that wouldn't happen. Their life will be greatly improved and that's what I focus on. Of course, I like money too."He silently stared at her before continuing, "You and I have worked together for a while, but this is the first time a person you recruited tried to keep the baby. She knew what would happen to her if she reneged on our agreement. She knew better. I'll be honest. You were responsible for her and you failed this time. Failure is not acceptable in my business. Basically, when the system is working right everyone gets what they want. Just be aware that I will do whatever is necessary to fulfill a contract. The baby you'll be caring for this week is part of a contract and it will be fulfilled."
