A great read!

Having spent almost half of my previous career as an FBI Special Agent in the New York Office, I have first hand experience in working events like Fleet Week. Mr. Harrison does an admirable job in conveying the actions and interactions of the various entities responsible for securing such events. I found An Opaque War to be a great read and look forward to the future adventures of Hannah Crossman.

Harrison scores a direct hit.

The author shows great skill in handling a complex topic with expert, inside knowledge and simultaneously deftly developing interpersonal relationships among the characters involved. As a former naval intelli-gence specialist with direct experience with the inner workings of the NSA, DIA, and CIA, I am quite impressed with this book--there is so much realism involved that the term "novel" doesn't do it justice. I was quite surprised at the inclusion of situations this nation is dealing with at this very moment. Very well done and highly recommended.

I wanted some insight from an intelligence insider...and i got a really good novel!

I bought this book thinking that I would the perspective of someone who has been in the intelligence field for years -- and that it would be a good balance to what we read in the media. I expected a fairly fact-dense book with little plot intended to show us 'novices' how complex intelligence is as a field. Instead, i read a really enjoyable novel with real characters set in a real intelligence operation. Incredible for a first novel!

Great International Intrigue and a Romance!

Mr. Harrison has captured the realities of everyday struggles in the intelligence and law enforcement world against the threat of terrorism operating within our communities. His characters and dialogue are real, his multifaceted story including a romance, moves clearly and rapidly to an unexpected climax. I can't wait to see the movie!

Countering Terrorism - An Inside (Fictional) View

Author Frederic Harrison brings over 30 years of experience in the Office of Naval Intelligence, National Security Agency and the Central Intelligence Agency into a realistic yarn that could be happening today (or tomorrow). The book portrays differing frames of view from the White House to the field agent (FBI and CIA) concerned with the same issue, protecting against a terrorist attack in New York during the annual Fleet Review Week. Harrison's career has involved interagency projects, including a key role in the development of Intelink (Top Secret Intranet: How U.S. Intelligence Built Intelink - the World's Largest, Most Secure Network). His portrayal of the relationships between federal, state, local and international law enforcement/intelligence organizations, based on this experience, adds extraordinary realism to an already believable and exciting plot. A point is made that, although the dots may be present, connecting them is not always possible. Opaque War begins in Pakistan and ends in Pakistan, but not without dots in Paris, London, Washington, DC and many in New York. They are eventually skillfully and realistically connected, using the combined resources of US Federal law enforcement and intelligence, as well as foreign intelligence sources. Intertwined within the dots are discussions between characters (good and bad) that provide a multifaceted view of the complexity of international terrorism, and how to combat it. A highly readable book, both informative and entertaining. (The reviewer has served in Federal Law Enforcement, the Office of Naval Intelligence and the National Security Agency.)
