An electrifying dystopian novel packed with a tantalizing love triangle, gripping political intrigue, and a Bachelor-style competition from the critically acclaimed author of The Dividing Sky, Jill Tew. "If you think that romance comprises a dystopian novel's ability to deliver sharp commentary, The Dividing Sky is her to prove you wrong." -- Veronica Roth, #1 New York Times bestselling author Eden Lowell has plenty to be frustrated about. In the flooded Marshes of former Miami, each day is about survival. Even her feelings for her best friend Henry are more complicated than they should be. Luckily, Eden knows exactly who to blame: the Cruisers, corporate elite who sail the world on massive ships instead of facing the environmental crimes they've committed on land. When Eden learns that a Cruiser family is hosting a dating competition for their heir, Theo Desjardins, she seizes an opportunity. Aided by a political agitator known as the Ringmaster, she'll infiltrate the competition, break Theo's heart, and then steal his money for the Marshes. A perfect plan, until she gets to know Theo, who's not only handsome but surprisingly kind. As Eden drifts deeper down into the Cruisers' world, the line separating truth and lies becomes murky. Torn between two identities, two loves, and two futures, will she choose the mission, or her heart?
Henry and his family has been the best thing that happened to Eden after her mother left her. They're the reason why she's survived the Marshes. It's definitely the Cruisers fault, they're the corporate elite who sail on ships instead of facing the damages they've done to the environment. When a Cruiser family wants to marry off their heir, Theo, this is Eden's chance to help the family who helped her and also get revenge.
This reminded me of Hunger Games minus the unaliving and The Selection . It focus on social structure, environment, and competition. I thought the plot was really good. The beginning focused on the environment and how poorly people live. However,. it did feel slow and dragging.
I personally dislike the love triangle trope, but it did make the stakes higher for this story. It made you feel for Eden for sure. And speaking of Eden. I love how smart she is and how she played the game. I appreciate that the story didn't only rely on her difference to the other contestants. . She definitely made the story interesting.
The other plot besides the competition was also amazing as it unfolds. I kept guessing from the start. The mystery aspect definitely helped the story keep going. However, the reveal and the conclusion fell short for me.
Plot was good, characters were great, mystery was a nice touch , However, some of the elements was just okay for me.
