With the proliferation of digital audio distribution over digital media, audio content analysis is fast becoming a requirement for designers of intelligent signal-adaptive audio processing systems. Written by a well-known expert in the field, this book provides quick access to different analysis algorithms and allows comparison between different approaches to the same task, making it useful for newcomers to audio signal processing and industry experts alike. A review of relevant fundamentals in audio signal processing, psychoacoustics, and music theory, as well as downloadable MATLAB files are also included. I am sure glad that this is an introduction. It was a bit of a learning curve to build the background to appreciate what this book is trying to say. It helped to have at least a fundamental knowledge of music and computers; even then, you may pick up some concepts that were missed the first time around.
Once again, to take advantage of the book, you need to have MATLAB. There are practical examples online. Too bad that is not mentioned on the cover.
It is weird that a lot of the acronyms I used never had meaning until I saw them spelled out in this book. It seems to borrow from a lot of different disciplines but focuses on music. I have seen many of the formulas before in television repair books and specialized radio encryption methods.
Anyway, there is something for everyone, no matter if you are starting from scratch or are in the industry.
No book can be everything, but there is enough here to take you farther than you want to go, and it has a great reference section.
