An Engrossing Read

Scenario from back of the book: An American miss with a mind of her own, Gillian Prescott was miserable in England, homesick, and heartsick at her father's admonition to find a proper English gentleman to marry. The earl of Wrexham was a model of stoic British composure, and handsome as well. He was also in dire financial straits and quite ripe for the plucking, so she was told. The earl, however, could not be bought any more than Gillian would agree to her father's most inconvenient match. Soon, though, events conspired to convince her that the fastest way to return to her beloved Virginia was to marry the man and produce an heir. But of course, things rarely work out so conveniently... I enjoyed this book very much. For one thing, this was not an usual Cinderella story, rather this was about a captain retired from war came home to reclaim his title and ruined financial situation. The story was a good account of subtle understanding and emotion changes before realizing the true love for each other. Even the minor characters were real and well-liked. The only bone that I had to pick was Ms. Carmichael was somewhat inconsistent about number of dowager's own children, and the location of happening of the event; however, these were all harmless slips. All in all, this was a very touching read, and best one by Ms. Carmichael that I had read so far.

A must-read for Regency fans.

If you like Jane Austen's delightful stories, you'll love this merry tale of a forthright American miss and her brooding but soft-hearted English Lord. I couldn't put it down
