A simple little fib--?

When Miss Helen Fairmead left her boarding school behind, she certainly had been taught the rules of society along with all the other subjects in which a young lady must excel. But sometimes, the lure of something--or someone--causes even the most proper young lady to ignore everything she's been taught. While traveling from the school to live with her older sister Margaret and brother-in-law Gregory Bourne, a sudden storm--and fear of a highwayman--halts her coach and Helen is compelled to spend the night at an inn. Taken up with the excitement of this rather shocking situation, she pretends to be a widow--Mrs. Brown by name--in the hope of preserving her reputation as an innocent young miss. Who knew that the one man she should never have met would be the one man she would always want? Who could have predicted that the naïve deception would have such ferocious repercussions? Of course, charmers of both sexes have always been present in any society, and the Regency era had many more than its required allotment. The Bournes think that their friend, Ralph St. John will be the perfect husband for Helen, but she finds something not quite pleasing about him, when she becomes acquainted with him. Adam, Lord Drummond, on the other hand, is most pleasing--to Helen--if not to her family. However, when Helen decides to confess all to Adam, she is thwarted at every turn, and before long, a duel is in the works. Thanks to the friendship of her maid, Mary and Mary's suitor Peter, all comes right in the end. All the misunderstandings are untangled and the villain banished to another kingdom! It is such a pleasure to read a book by this well-established author. She keeps the reader in the story with every word, every description. If you concentrate, you can almost smell the flowers and trees that surround Bourne End, Windsor Castle and Ascot. For sure, you'll be captivated by the marvelous descriptions of the fashions--and the parties--of the day. Nobody does it quite like Sandra Heath!
